WHERE HERITAGE MEETS THE MODERN WORLD

 

CULTURE CLASH is a contemporary fine-art portrait series by South African photographer Kim Steinberg, exploring what happens when deeply rooted cultural identity meets the objects, rituals and visual language of modern life. Across 20 imagined portraits, traditional dress, adornment and symbolism are placed alongside the unmistakable objects of contemporary living — a smartphone, headphones, a laptop, pizza, designer accessories, virtual reality and other everyday icons of the modern world. The result is deliberately unexpected.

These are not portraits of people caught between two worlds. They are portraits of people who inhabit both.

The work asks questions about identity, progress and cultural change. What do we hold onto as the world around us changes? What becomes part of our identity and when tradition meets modernity, which one changes the other? Each portrait begins as an imagined encounter between a specific cultural aesthetic and a distinctly contemporary object. The resulting images are created through a combination of photographic artistry, AI-assisted image creation and physical hand-finishing, allowing the work itself to exist somewhere between the traditional and the new.

That process is intentional.

The photographs are not presented as documentary representations of real people or communities. Instead, they are contemporary visual interpretations; imagined characters inhabiting a world where ancestral heritage and global culture exist side by side. The dark, cinematic portraits give the subjects the presence of classical fine art, while the modern objects introduce moments of humour, tension, familiarity and contradiction.

CULTURE CLASH is ultimately about the conversation between the two. Not old versus new, not tradition versus progress, but the fascinating space in between.

 

THE ARTIST

Kim Steinberg is a South African photographer whose work is rooted in portraiture, storytelling and the relationship between people and place. With a photographic career spanning more than a decade, Kim has developed a distinctive visual language characterized by rich colour, dramatic light, emotion and carefully constructed narratives. With CULTURE CLASH, she moves beyond conventional portrait photography into a more conceptual form of image-making — using contemporary technology to explore some of the oldest questions surrounding human identity. The series represents a new chapter in her practice: one where photography, artificial intelligence and physical fine-art intervention become part of the same creative process.

Each artwork in the CULTURE CLASH collection is available in a selection of sizes, with a strict total edition of only 30 works per image across all sizes. Once the 30 editions of an artwork have been sold, that image will never be produced again.
